10 places you should know from History/Geography Class!

Trevi Fountain Rome

There are some places in the world you SHOULD know something about. Some have played monumental parts in the history of our species, while others are landmarks in human ingenuity and creativity. Here is a list of 10 places you should know a little about, or at least be aware of their existence. The list could of course be top 100 or even top 1000, but I guess you need to start somewhere : )

1. The Parthenon temple on the Acropolis in Athens is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Greece.

All of the places mentioned are in their own way , very spectacular . One venue I would like to visit is Mecca , where all devout Muslims have to visit as part of the Haj . There and I would say Jerusalem are two cities I personally would place amongst my ” bucket list ” !

Mecca during the Haj has to be something else. Not the place to be if you suffer from claustrophobia though :)

I can’t say I’d agree. Both Mecca and Jerusalem derive their importance from their significance to their respective religion. The sites above are universal and are renowned for their historical impact or geological beauty. Although I am sure Jerusalem and Mecca are incredible sights.

I see your point, but those cities have also had huge impact on the history of the region and the entire world. The Western Wall in Jerusalem for example would be cool to see one day :) .

Jerusalem the epicenter of three major religions , Christianity , Judaism and Islam . But it remains a divisive city .

That is also true, however I think there is a certain element of danger in involving religious sites in a list or rank. There is no doubt these cities played large roles in the history of their regions. But by saying one is more important, or even as important as another there is the likely risk you will unwittingly offend someone. Nonsensical or otherwise.

Mecca and Jerusalem are more than religious symbols . But beyond that , it is the beauty of the places in question . That being said consider this , cities such as London , home venue for XXX th Olympiad , where Olympic Park is situated was at one time a place of unparallelled squalor . So many major metropolitan cities around the world are like that . It’s endemic and unfortunately we’re only told and led to believe what’s said to be so wonderful about these places .

Olympic Park is less than 6 miles away from where I grew up as a child .

Is it me but did Federer simply turn up merely to site-see ? Muray took his a#s to and behind the woodshed and beat him like an unwanted stepchild .

Federer seemed like another player than the one who won Wimbledon just weeks before. Maybe he just felt sorry for Andy? ;) . And EVERY video with Gianna is risky. We still can’t resist them though!

This is just as subjective fun list that I made up, and as you see I did not include Mecca or Jerusalem :) . Thanks for the comments buddy!

Sorry, I was just thinking out loud, didn’t mean to drag it into anything serious, its a great post :)

Hi there. #10 appears truly beautiful…catch that rainbow. Big Ben reminds me of European Vacation when they were stuck in the roundabout. Great list.

Yeah, Victoria Falls is beautifull, and Big Ben is a must in every movie or postacard when it comes to London :) .

Brandenburg Gate in Berlin would be a great monument for a second list. It is connected to almost EVERY historical period in Germany. Over the centuries, revolutionaries, dictators and politicians made it a symbol for the german struggle to be unified and free.
It may not be extraordinary impressive, but I encourage you to take a look at the history this monument has shaped.

Without a doubt. I was also thinking of including the Reichstag (that was burned down), but I can only choose 10 :) . Not to mention the historical and political importance of the Berlin Wall.

      • August 6, 2012 at 1:09 pm | #17

Thank you for considering it…If you ask me the Brandenburg Gate would be the most significant. Now that you mention it, I might want to write an article about it right now^^
It is just sad that history and culture, especially about “foreign” countries, is not a part of education, or not of importance for young people.
Even here in Germany most people don’t know when the Gate or the Parliament (the “Bundestag” as it would be called in German, “Reichstag” refers to the old, german “empire”, which, luckily, is a federal republic today) was built.

Yeah, it seems like popular “culture” is not very interested in that. Was in Berlin a couple of years ago, but only for 2 days. Looking forward to read your article on the subject ;) .

Federer may way well have been out of gas but his performance was no excuse !

In terms of religion it no longer plays a part in my life from a belief basis . Seen too many horrors as a result from being in the military to have deep religious faith .

  7. August 6, 2012 at 6:15 pm | #20

I’ve been to 4 so far and will have added the Kremlin and the Great Wall of China to that by the end of the year. :) How about you?

    • August 6, 2012 at 6:26 pm | #21

Only 3 for me ( The Trevi Fountain, Big Ben, Colloseum) so I guess I need to get going if I want to catch up with you!
